Empowering others to make positive lasting changes

Let me introduce Laura from Hilltop Hypnotherapy! Laura is passionate about empowering others to make positive lasting changes in their lives. Specialising in anxiety, phobias, childbirth, pain management and weight loss.

Laura can guide you to reach your full potential and learn hypnotherapy skills which can help you in a wide range of areas of your life, for example, confidence, public speaking, sports performance.

Laura’s HypnoBirthing course she teaches is the Mongan Method – it’s the original gold standard method and taught worldwide but accredited with the Royal College of Midwives. Laura says “It helped me no end with both my births so to be affiliated with them now is a great honour”.

Go for it! Get climbing that mountain and let the world know about what you do!

A client solved a life long issue of being unable to get to work on time!

Let’s get personal! Where do you live? Do you have a family? What do you do for work and play?

I live just outside Plymouth in sunny Cornwall. Along with my husband Andy, two children (Thomas 8 and Harriet 5) and our 13 year old Jack Russell, Fudge!

I’m a Clinical Hypnotherapist and HypnoBirthing Practitioner who is passionate about empowering others to make positive lasting changes in their lives. Both Hypnotherapy and HypnoBirthing have helped me greatly and I love passing the skill onto others.

What is your business called and how did you decide on that name?

My business is called Hilltop Hypnotherapy and HypnoBirthing. I decided on the name as almost 20 years ago I broke my neck and almost lost my life in a car accident. It was a long road to recovery. I’ll never fully recover physically but one quote that kept me positive was by Helen Keller:

“The marvellous richness of human experience would lose something of rewarding joy if there were no limitations to overcome. The hilltop hour would not be half so wonderful if there were no dark valleys to traverse.”

I guess I’m experiencing my hilltop hour now – the business and having the children I never thought I’d have makes every step worth it. I embrace every day now-life is too short to do otherwise!

What type of business do you have? What is your niche?

My business specialises in pain management, anxiety, phobias and fears. I also see a lot of ladies for weight loss as they often recommend me to friends who notice the difference in their figures and their confidence! My niche is Hypnotherapy and HypnoBirthing. The two go hand in hand and mums often tell me they appreciate how I can personalise the course to suit their needs.

What do you offer your readers/customers that no one else does?

As an experienced hypnotherapist, I am able to work with each individual in a way that suits them. I know from personal experience how effective hypnotherapy is at treating chronic pain, anxieties, fears and other issues and being able to transfer that to the HypnoBirthing is something I’m passionate about. I don’t offer an off the peg service-it’s truly individual and I pride myself on great back up support.

What made you start your business? Does the reality of running your own business meet your initial thoughts and expectations?

I’m passionate about what I do and how hypnotherapy can make such a huge impact on people’s lives. The reality far exceeds expectations-people have been so supportive and the business community in this area is incredible.

One thing that strikes me is how we women lift each other up and support each other-it’s inspiring! Admittedly it takes a lot of hard work, planning and dedication which can be tiring but I wouldn’t want it any other way.

Make positive lasting changes

Being text by someone who’s flown for the first time in many years after a couple of hypnotherapy sessions to combat their phobia. Or from a mum who’s had a really great birth experience is something you really can’t beat.

How many hours a week do you spend on your business? Do you find you can work this around your other commitments?

If you asked my husband and children they’d probably say ‘too many’! However, it takes about 30 hours out of my week and I work other commitments around it.

Who inspires you most?

Christopher Reeve has always been an inspiration. We had the same operation and his positive and determined outlook inspired me to prove all medical predictions wrong and write my own story rather than the one that I was supposed to follow just like he did. I’m inspired by many house bloggers especially Scandi inspired, other hypnobirthing practitioners, How to Glitter a Turd and Gem’s Wholesome Kitchen (one day I’ll cook like Gem!) – oh and Anna Jones – her recipe books are like nothing I’ve known before!

What is the big picture? Your business dream?

I’d like to keep growing and getting word of how amazing hypnotherapy and hypnobirthing out there so that one day, everyone will have a calm, gentle birth and be free of anxiety…it’s not a bad dream?!

What has been the biggest problem that you have had to overcome, to enable you to get where you are today?

Learning to walk again after breaking my neck is quite possibly the biggest problem I’ve overcome to get where I am. I also overcame severe anxiety a few years ago. The fact I can stand in front of people now was something I never thought would happen back when I was having panic attacks walking into a supermarket. As my grandma used to say though, look to the sunshine and the shadows will fall behind-if I hadn’t overcome what I have I wouldn’t be the person I am now and so passionate about passing these skills onto others.

Have there been any crazy/unbelievable moments that have happened since you began your business? Let’s celebrate your successes!

Talking to a large group of people about hypnotherapy for chronic pain management was a pretty crazy moment for me! Every single client and hypnobirthing course is crazy, I truly love it and can’t believe it’s become a reality.

If you could be interviewed by someone famous/a major influencer. Who would it be and why?

I’d love to be interviewed by Fearne Cotton, her podcast is really inspirational and I think we’d get along great!

Have there been any hard times in your career that made you question your decision of becoming a Femail Entrepreneur? How did you overcome this?

When I first set up and couldn’t find an office/room that I could afford. I had to think outside the box, see clients anywhere I could and eventually found where I’m based now at Saltash Physiotherapy Clinic. It’s a great space and although I’m self-employed I loved spending time around the other people who work there.

Where do you see yourself in 5 years?

As the mother of a teenager and a 10-year-old.eek! I see myself happy with a thriving business that I’m proud of.

Is there any advice you’d give to those who want to start on a similar business journey to you?
